About This Role
Summary:
The Civil Engineering Intern supports the Building Works PEMB Engineering team by assisting with engineering design support, process improvements, and project documentation related to pre-engineered metal building systems. This role provides hands-on experience in structural and civil engineering practices within a manufacturing and construction environment. The intern will work closely with engineering staff to support drawing reviews, engineering calculations, project documentation, and process improvement initiatives that improve engineering accuracy, efficiency, and standardization. The internship provides exposure to real-world engineering workflows, engineering software tools, and construction documentation processes.
Core Functions:
Engineering Support
- Assist engineers with design support activities for PEMB building systems.
- Review engineering drawings and documentation for accuracy and completeness.
- Support engineering calculations under supervision.
- Assist in reviewing structural details and specifications.
- Help organize and maintain engineering documentation.
Engineering Process Improvement
- Assist in identifying opportunities to improve engineering workflows.
- Support development and documentation of standardized engineering processes.
- Help improve drawing standards and documentation consistency.
- Support engineering data organization and digital file structure improvements.
Project Documentation Support
- Assist with preparation of project documentation and engineering records.
- Organize engineering files and maintain project records.
- Support engineering teams in preparing technical documentation.
- Assist in updating engineering templates and standards.
Technical Learning & Development
- Participate in engineering design reviews.
- Observe project lifecycle from design through production.
- Develop familiarity with PEMB design processes.
- Learn engineering documentation and drafting standards.
Collaboration & Communication
- Work with engineers to gather project information.
- Participate in team meetings and project reviews.
- Provide progress updates on assigned tasks.
- Communicate clearly with supervisors and project stakeholders.

Education & Experience:
Minimum Required:
- Junior or Senior pursuing a degree in Civil Engineering or Structural Engineering.
- Basic understanding of engineering drawings.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
Preferred
- Experience with steel design.
- Experience with statics and structural analysis.
- Exposure to AutoCAD or similar drafting software.
- Coursework in structural design.
- Interest in construction or manufacturing engineering.
Physical Demands & Work Environment:
Work is performed in an office environment. This role will routinely utilize standard office equipment to perform the core functions listed in this job description. This position requires the ability to occasionally lift office products and supplies as well as communicate verbally and electronically. The work is primarily sedentary and requires extensive reading to perform the core functions listed in this job description. While performing the core function of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk, hear, and stand.
